Data Filter Extension

One support ticket, followed to its root: filtering redesigned on eye-tracking evidence — a third more data on screen, complaints cut in half, a pattern the platform adopted.

Context

A single support ticket about filtering was the visible tip. Underneath: a fixed 320px filter sidebar consuming 38% of horizontal space, eight rows of data visible at a time, and roughly 10,000px of scrolling per session in a product whose whole job is showing operational data.

Highlights

Key decision

Argue with evidence, not opinion. Heat-mapping showed 83% of clicks live inside the table — attention lives in the data. So the filters moved out of its way, from a permanent sidebar into a responsive top bar the operator opens when filtering and forgets otherwise.

Process

A four-week sprint: instrumented sessions and heat-mapping to locate attention, the top-bar concept prototyped against real vehicle data, tested with operators, shipped.

Before

After

The same screen, before and after — the table gets its width back.

Results

+30%

visible data area on every list screen

−50%

filter-related support complaints

The top bar became the platform standard — and the seam that presets and filter widgets later built on.
